Basic information

Calcium carbide is an important basic chemical raw material,mainly used to produce acetylene gas. Also used in organic synthesis,oxyacetylene welding,organic synthesis and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) production and so on. The reaction product acetylene can be used as fuel,but when it contains impurities,it will generate toxic gases such as arsinide and phosphine,which need to be purified by sulfuric acid and potassium dichromate. This substance is flammable when exposed to moisture and reacts vigorously with acids. Strict protection is required during operation. In case of leakage,it should be safely recovered with sand or dry lime.

Application

1. Acetylene produced by the reaction of calcium carbide with water can be synthesized into many organic compounds such as synthetic rubber, artificial resin, acetone, ketene, carbon black, etc. At the same time acetylene oxygen flame is widely used in metal welding and cutting.

2. When powdered calcium carbide is heated with nitrogen, the reaction produces calcium cyanamide, or lime nitrogen, lime nitrogen is an important raw material for the preparation of cyanamide. The melt produced by the reaction of lime nitrogen with salt is used in gold mining and non-ferrous metal industry.

3. Calcium carbide itself can be used as a desulfurizer in iron and steel industry.

4. Production of PVC.

5. Made into calcium carbide lamps.
